Dr. Emil Schemitsch is the Richard Ivey Professor of Surgery, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Western University and Chief of Surgery at London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care in London, Ontario. He is also past Head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital at the University of Toronto. A University of Toronto graduate in Medicine, Dr. Schemitsch completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Toronto. He completed fellowships at the University of Washington and Harvard University. Dr. Schemitsch’s research has focused upon the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and arthritis. His basic research interests include the systemic response to trauma, biomechanics, bone substitutes and the stimulation of fracture healing. His clinical research interests include clinical trials and outcomes studies in upper and lower extremity trauma and hip and knee replacement.
