Dr. Hurwitz was Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Mechanical Engineering for 14 years at the University of Virginia and am currently Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina. At the latter, he is the Principal Investigator for the surgical skills laboratory.
Dr. Hurwitz has been a consultant to the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Defense Non-Lethal Weapons Program. He was the Executive Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery from 2008 through 2017.
His principal areas of investigation have been the effect of diabetes on bone and tendon, the repair/ regeneration of tendon and bone, the advanced imaging of cartilage- including blunt trauma effects- and the use of best evidence in the clinical practice of orthopaedics. Dr. Hurwitz has over 100 peer reviewed manuscripts, 23 book chapters and has edited 5 books on different orthopaedic topics. Much of the research has been funded by the automobile industry through the University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics.
Dr. Hurwitz has been advisor to Masters and PhD candidates in Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia and was an instructor teaching the mechanics of human joint function.
