L. Andrew Koman, M.D. is Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He also serves as the executive director of the musculoskeletal service line . After graduating from Duke University School of Medicine, his postgraduate training at Duke University included one year of Pediatrics, one year of General Surgery, four years of Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellowship in Hand Surgery and Microsurgery. After serving on the faculty at Duke University , he joined the faculty at Wake Forest, where he remains. His clinical practice focuses on congenital hand , cerebral palsy, peripheral nerve injury and upper extremity vascular disorders. He has over 300 publications, has received over 7 million dollars in grants and has been honored by Wake Forest as an Established Investigator in Clinical Sciences, by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America as recipient of the Huene Award and By the OREF and AAOS with 2 Kappa Delta / OREF Clinical Research Awards ( in 1999 and 2019) . Dr. Koman is a member of 20 professional societies and has served as President of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, the North Carolina Orthopaedic Society, the North Carolina Society for Surgery of the Hand (which he founded), the Southern Orthopaedic Association, the Clinical Orthopaedic Society, the Hand Forum and the Southeastern Hand Club. Dr. Koman is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances, Orthopaedics in Motion, (a newsletter), and Orthopaedic Care, an online textbook.
